Arts and Social Science Education

The Department of Arts and Social Science Education is a dynamic academic unit within the Faculty of Education, dedicated to the preparation of competent, innovative, and socially responsive teachers in the fields of Arts and Social Sciences. Established in the 2014/2015 academic session, the Department began with a modest number of faculty members and has grown into a vibrant academic community supported by a team of specialists and professionals from related disciplines. The Department emphasizes the integration of subject content knowledge with professional teaching skills, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of contemporary education systems. It currently offers undergraduate programmes in Christian Religious Studies, Economics, and English Language/Literature in English Education, all designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, ethical awareness, and lifelong learning. In addition, the Department offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in English Education, which provides advanced training in language pedagogy, curriculum development, assessment practices, and research, equipping graduates to address modern challenges in English language teaching across diverse learning environments. To support effective teaching and research, the Department is equipped with essential facilities, including well-ventilated classrooms, ICT-enabled learning environments, a computer laboratory, language laboratory, educational resource centres, and a departmental library. Through its programmes, the Department is committed to producing highly qualified educators for secondary and tertiary institutions, promoting excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, and developing advanced pedagogical competencies aligned with global best practices and emerging technologies. With a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, the Department plays a strategic role in advancing teacher education and contributing meaningfully to national and international development.

Program Overview & Admission Information

Eligibility Criteria
In addition to appropriate UTME-Score, a candidate must possess five Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC)-credits passes including English Language, and Christian Religious Knowledge/Studies,( CRS) and three other relevant subjects in not more than two sittings. Direct Entry for Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A. Ed.) Christian Religious Studies i. A Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Christian Religious Knowledge or Religious Studies with a total cumulative points not less than a merit. In addition, the candidate must possess five ‘O’ Level credit passes in any subjects, including English Language in not more than two sittings. ii. Candidates seeking admission by Direct Entry must have passed at least two papers in the General Certificate of Education at the Advanced Level or any of its approved equivalents. One of the two papers must be Christian Religious Studies. In addition, the candidate must possess five ‘O’ Level credit passes in any subjects, including English Language in not more than two sittings at the Senior Secondary School level or its equivalent. iii. A Diploma in Theology or Religious Studies from an institution affiliated to a recognised University. In addition, the candidate must have five ‘O’ Level credit passes in any subjects, including English Language in not more than two sittings at Senior Secondary School level or equivalent. iv. A degree in any subject or discipline from an accredited university in Nigeria and abroad. Graduation Requirements for Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A. Ed.) Christian Religious Studies i. Students on a four-year degree programme must have passed a minimum of 120 credit units. ii. Direct entry students years degree programme must passed a minimum of 90 credit units. Admission and graduation requirements Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Education (B.Sc. Ed.) Economics For 4 Year Programme In addition to acceptable scores in UTME, candidates must have obtained five Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) credit passes which must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics or Commerce and two other relevant subjects and not more than 2 sittings. Candidates can also qualify for admission if they obtain credit level pass in a recognized University Certificate programme. Direct Entry Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Education (B.Sc. Ed.) Economics Candidates must possess, in addition to five credit level passes at Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) which must include Mathematics, English Language, Economics or Business Methods, Commerce or Marketing, two of which are at the Advanced Level in any of the following: i. A pass at merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme; ii. Two (2) passes in relevant subject areas of Advanced Level at HSC (WAEC), IJMB, IUEPB (minimum of 5points with at least one point from each of the three relevant subjects) and Cambridge.; iii. Passes in relevant areas in the NCE.

Completion Requirements
Graduation Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Education (B.Sc. Ed.) Economics To be eligible for the award of B.Sc. (Economics Education), the following conditions must be met: i. Candidates admitted through the UTME mode shall register for and pass at least 120 units of courses during the 4-year degree programme. ii. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 1.5 must be obtained at the end of the programme; iii. Class of degree shall be based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) earned at the end of the programme; iv. The CGPA shall be used in the determination of the class of degree. Admission and graduation requirements for Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A. Ed.) English Language/Literature in- English Admission and Graduation Requirements 4 year Programme In addition to acceptable passes in UTME, candidates must obtain at credit level passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) final year examination in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language. Candidates studying sciences and arts subjects must obtain credit level passes in those subjects. Direct Entry Mode Any one of the following qualifications is admissible for the three-year Education degree programmes. Five Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) which must include Mathematics, English Language, any relevant subject and two of which must be at the Advanced Level in any of the following: i. A pass at merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme (provided the O/L requirements are satisfied). ii. Two passes in relevant subject areas at Advanced level. iii. Passes in two major subjects in relevant areas in NCE. iv. Two passes at the IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) examination or Cambridge Moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examinations or International Baccalaureate from a recognized institution. v. For B.Ed. (Technology) Programme, holders of NCE, City and Guilds as well as OND and NBC/NTC Certificates, may be admitted. Graduation Requirements The following regulations shall govern the conditions for the award of a honours degree. i. Candidates admitted through the UTME mode shall have registered for at least 120 units of courses during the 4-year degree programme. ii. Candidates must have registered and passed all the compulsory courses specified for the programme. The determination of the class of degree shall be based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) earned at the end of the programme. The CGPA shall be used in the determination of the class of degree. How to Apply for Undergraduate Programmes in the Department i. Before applying, candidates must satisfy the basic requirements: O’Level Requirements and UTME Requirements. ii. Choose Veritas University as 1st or 2nd choice (or change later) iii. Apply through Direct Entry if you have: NCE, ND, IJMB, or A’Level qualifications iv. Go to the University official application portal: https://admission.veritas.edu.ng/ and create an account using: Email address, Phone number & JAMB registration number v. Pay Application Fee vi. Complete the Application Form vii. Upload Required Documents viii. Ensure all information is correct before submission ix. You will be invited for: Online screening OR Physical screening x. If successful: You will receive an admission letter. xi. Proceed with acceptance and registration Admission Requirements for Master’s Degree (M.A./M.Ed.) in English Language Candidates applying for the Master’s degree programme must possess: i. A Bachelor’s degree in English Language, Literature in English or related disciplines from a recognized university with at least Second Class Lower Division. ii. Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma in relevant areas with good performance may also be considered. iii. Five credit passes in SSCE/NECO/ including English Language and Mathematics. How to Apply for Postgraduate Programmes in the Department To be eligible for admission into the M.Ed English (Master of Education in English), you must meet the general requirements, which include: i. At least five (5) O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics ii. A Bachelor’s Degree (B.Ed or B.A in English or related field) iii. Minimum of Second-Class Lower Division (or equivalent) iv. Candidates with Third Class or HND may be considered with PGD (Postgraduate Diploma in Education) v. NYSC discharge or exemption certificate (for Nigerian applicants) vi. Visit the official Veritas University postgraduate admission portal https://admission.veritas.edu.ng/ vii. Select Postgraduate Programme Application viii. Choose Faculty of Education → M.Ed English ix. Create an account using a valid email address x. Fill in personal and academic details accurately xi. Upload Required Documents (Degree certificate and transcript, NYSC certificate/exemption letter, O’Level results, WAEC/NECO/ NABTEB, Birth certificate, Passport photograph) xii. Pay Application Fee
