The
Common Good
An annual magazine on artificial intelligence, health, education, energy and enterprise.
Issue 01, October 2026
The Pursuit of Happiness in a World of Moral Relativism
Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah
Catholic Bishop of Sokoto
Convocation lecture at the 8th Convocation Ceremony of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos, on 29 October 2026.
Bishop Kukah asks the Class of 2026 how they define happiness, and argues that the answer decides what they will love and what they will build. Drawing on St. Augustine, Catholic social teaching and the arrival of artificial intelligence, he challenges graduates to find a problem around them, build an enterprise that solves it, and help end extreme poverty in Nigeria.

“A compass whose north changes according to who is holding it cannot guide anyone home.”
“Your generation has arrived while the cement is still being mixed.”
“What you love will shape what you build.”
