Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic and rapidly evolving profession that is designed to provide a broad basis for fundamental scientific knowledge and its application such that the graduands are well equipped to meet the changing needs of modern scientific knowledge and challenges in health care. The programme is equally designed to provide sound academic and professional background to produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who would be capable of working anywhere in the World. The students of this noble discipline are exposed to application of Medical Laboratory Science in key areas such as Medicine, Pharmaceutical Industries, Food and beverages and Research Institutions to mention but a few. The courses offered in this programme shall expose the students to core areas like Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology, Hematology, Blood Group Serology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Mycology, Immunology/immunochemistry and Histopathology as well as Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering. Students 'knowledge will be broadened in the above core areas by taking ancillary courses in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology. They shall also be trained to understand the principles of medical laboratory equipment with their existing techniques to modify them where necessary and possible. The practical aspect of the degree programme prepares the students to fit into any diagnostic laboratory in hospitals, research institutes, food and beverage industries, other allied field, as well as practical teaching in higher institutions of learning, or self-employment. On successful completion of the five (5) years degree programme and one (1) year Internship training, graduands are registered as Associate Members with the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
