The Department of Software Engineering at Veritas University Abuja is committed to producing world-class software engineers equipped with the knowledge, technical competence, innovation mindset, and ethical values required to design, develop, deploy, and maintain software solutions that address national and global challenges. The Department combines academic excellence with practical experience, research, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement to prepare graduates capable of leading digital transformation across diverse sectors. The Department operates in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) and international best practices in Software Engineering education. Its curriculum integrates software engineering principles with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Data Science, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Human-Computer Interaction, Embedded Systems, DevOps, and Intelligent Information Systems. Research and innovation are central to the Department's philosophy. Through the Computational Intelligence and Data Science Research Laboratory (CIDSRL), the Department promotes multidisciplinary research that addresses societal challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, environmental sustainability, financial technology, climate resilience, and smart governance. Students actively participate in software development projects, hackathons, product exhibitions, industrial training, innovation challenges, and international competitions, providing them with practical experience and globally competitive skills. The Department's flagship Software Engineering Product Exhibition and Competition provides students with opportunities to transform research ideas into deployable software products while encouraging collaboration between academia, industry, government, and development partners. The 2026 edition focuses on "AI-Driven OneHealth Digitization Ecosystem," promoting intelligent solutions for healthcare, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. The vision of the Department is to become a globally recognized centre of excellence in Software Engineering education, research, innovation, and technology entrepreneurship, producing graduates and solutions that drive sustainable development and digital transformation. Its mission is to provide quality education, conduct impactful research, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and develop ethically grounded software professionals capable of solving local and global challenges through emerging digital technologies. The Department's core focus areas include Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Software Engineering and Software Architecture, Data Science and Big Data Analytics, Health Informatics and Digital Health, AI-Driven One Health Digitization Ecosystems, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Smart Cities and Intelligent Systems, Climate Informatics, Financial Technology (FinTech), Mobile and Web Application Development, Robotics, Intelligent Automation, and Digital Transformation. The Department aims to produce globally competitive software engineers with practical and research-based skills, promote excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, and Data Science, develop innovative digital solutions to societal challenges, foster collaborations with academia, government, and industry, encourage entrepreneurship through innovation and commercialization, develop leadership and ethical competencies, and support Nigeria's Digital Economy Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Department has recorded several notable achievements, including full NUC accreditation of the B.Sc. Software Engineering programme and successful NUC resource verification for the commencement of B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence and B.Sc. Data Science programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session. Through the CIDSRL, the Department has strengthened its research capacity while continuously investing in modern computing laboratories, industry partnerships, and innovation-driven teaching. Students and staff have received national and international recognition. In 2024, the Department won the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Africa Innovation Challenge, emerging first among 26 African universities with an IoT-based Smart Irrigation System and receiving the $20,000 grand prize. Students have also excelled in national STEM competitions, participated successfully in the Huawei ICT Competition, where the Department's 200-level students placed third in the 2026 Africa Regional Competition, earned recognition within Microsoft's global developer ecosystem, and developed innovative solutions in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health, Climate Technology, Blockchain, and Smart Digital Systems. The Department maintains strategic partnerships with organizations including the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Microsoft, Huawei Technologies, African Telecommunications Union (ATU), SEMED Technologies, and other national and international research and technology organizations. These collaborations strengthen teaching, research, industrial training, product development, technology transfer, and innovation, positioning the Department as a leading contributor to Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, and Software Engineering education in Nigeria.
