Computer and Information Technology

The Department of Computer Science at Veritas University, Abuja, was established in 2016 following a successful National Universities Commission (NUC) resource verification exercise. The Department commenced academic activities in the 2016/2017 academic session with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Computer Science programme. Since its accreditation in 2019, the Department has experienced significant growth in both student enrollment and infrastructure. The student population has increased substantially, reflecting the programme’s rising reputation. In response, the Department has expanded its software and hardware laboratories to enhance practical learning. A major milestone was the establishment of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics laboratories in 2023, positioning the Department at the forefront of modern technological innovation. The programme has also achieved important academic and professional advancements. Following successful NUC verification, the Department now offers postgraduate programmes, including diploma, master’s, and PhD degrees. Additional opportunities such as the CISCO programme provide students with professional certifications in networking and communications, improving their career prospects. The Department maintains collaborations with reputable organizations, including Google, to support research and innovation. Its curriculum is regularly updated in line with CCMAS guidelines, with emphasis on emerging areas such as embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the evolving ICT industry. In line with the University’s mission to provide holistic education and advance knowledge in the service of God and society, the programme is committed to developing skilled manpower for the ICT sector through teaching, research, and innovation. The philosophy of the programme centers on the scientific pursuit of truth through the study of computing systems, their processes, and applications. It aims to foster intellectual growth, innovation, and ethical responsibility, preparing graduates to apply computing knowledge for the advancement of society and humanity.

Program Overview & Admission Information

Eligibility Criteria
The Computer Science programme leads to the award of B.Sc. (Hons) Computer Science Degree and admission into B.Sc. Computer Science (Computer Science Revised Curriculum 2023) is merit-based.

 (a) UTME Candidates (4 Years) Passes at credit level in five subjects which include English Language Mathematics, and Physics including any other relevant science or social science subjects at the Ordinary Level Examination (SSCE, WASCE, or GCE) in not more than two sittings. (b) Direct Entry Candidates (3 Years) Possession of one of the following qualifications: i) Higher School Certificate ii) Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) Examination iii) Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) iv) National Diploma (ND) Upper Credit in Computer Science or Related field* v) Higher National Diploma (HND) Lower Credit in Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics vi) First degree in a related area from a recognized University vii) Plus, Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requirement. (c) Change of Programme of Study Change of Programme of Study involves the transfer of students from one College or Department to another within Veritas University. The minimum requirement for transfer is a CGPA of 1.5. All other UTME requirements apply. (d) Inter-University Transfer Inter-university transfer involves the transfer of students from other universities to Veritas University. The minimum requirement is a CGPA 1.5 on 5-point scale, or 1.00 on 4-point scale. Transferred students to take all lower-level precursors of their core courses. All other UJTME requirements apply. Candidates must obtain and fill the Inter-University Transfer form from the University's Admissions Office. An application for admission to the University through inter-university transfer will be considered only if the receiving Department is satisfied that the candidate has met the minimum academic requirements for admission to the chosen study programme. All inter-university transfer candidates will normally be admitted into 200 (or lower) level of the receiving programme.

  • Complete the online application form.
  • Upload required documents (O'Level results, JAMB slip, etc.).
  • Pay the application fee as indicated on the portal.
Completion Requirements
Graduation Requirements Every four-year programme has a maximum duration of six years for graduation. If a student is unable to graduate within this period, the studentship of such a student shall be considered to have lapsed and the student should withdraw unless otherwise approved by Senate. For a student to graduate, the student must obtain a minimum of 120 or a maximum of 162 credit units for a four-year programme. Students must pass all core courses, GES and specified THG courses before they can graduate. Learning Outcomes a. Regime of Subject Knowledge: It is expected that students are conversant with 
core areas of computer science. 
 b. Competencies and Skills: Students are expected to develop a wide range of 
different abilities, dynamism, and skills. These may be divided into three categories, viz: cognitive abilities and skills, practical skills, and general skills. c. Behavioral Attitudes: General skills relating to non-subject specific competencies, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. 
 Attainment Levels Graduates of Computer Science are expected to have the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in Computer Science, development of relevant ICT for national development and societal needs.
