The Department of Political Science and Diplomacy is one of the pioneering academic units of Veritas University Abuja. The programme was among the first courses offered at the inception of the former College of Management, Social Sciences, Arts and Theological Studies (MSAT) in 2008. Initially housed under the Department of Management and Social Sciences, it became part of the Department of Social Sciences following the restructuring of the College in the 2010/2011 academic session. With the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the 2013/2014 academic session, Political Science and Diplomacy emerged as an independent department within the Faculty. Over the years, the Department has been led by distinguished scholars and administrators. Its pioneer Head of Department was Rev. Fr. (Prof.) Basil Akpan Ekot, followed by Rev. Fr. Prof. Shimawua Dominic, Rev. Fr. Dr. Okwara Emmanuel, Professor Okon Eminue, and Rev. Fr. Dr. Innocent Jooji. The current Head of Department is Dr. Isaac Otegwu. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Political Science and Diplomacy. The programme is designed to provide students with a strong academic and professional foundation for careers in public administration, diplomacy, governance, international relations, politics, development practice, and related fields. It combines rigorous theoretical training with practical knowledge, preparing graduates to assume leadership and managerial responsibilities in both public and private sectors. Recognizing the increasingly interconnected nature of the modern world, the Department adopts an interdisciplinary approach that equips students with competencies in political science, diplomacy, public administration, and international relations. Students are also encouraged to develop communication skills, including proficiency in at least one foreign language, to enhance their effectiveness in global engagements. Graduates are well prepared for postgraduate studies, research, and professional careers in government, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, media institutions, and diplomatic services. In addition to its undergraduate programme, the Department offers postgraduate programmes leading to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Political Science and Administrative Studies, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Political Science and Diplomacy, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Political Science. The Department is committed to advancing knowledge in political, administrative, and diplomatic studies through quality teaching, research, and community engagement. Its programmes are designed to promote critical thinking, ethical leadership, policy analysis, and a commitment to justice, peace, and societal development. The objectives of the Department are to promote excellence in the study and practice of Political Science, Diplomacy, and Administrative Studies; develop graduates with the knowledge and skills required to contribute effectively to governance, diplomacy, and public administration; foster teaching and research in the search for truth, justice, and sustainable development; enhance the political, socio-economic, and moral advancement of society; build capacity and competencies in contemporary national politics, international relations, and diplomatic practice; prepare graduates to function effectively as administrators, diplomats, journalists, policy analysts, and leaders in public and private institutions; and encourage scientific research and intellectual inquiry that contribute to national and global development. The Department has recorded several notable achievements over the years. On 4 May 2026, a delegation of fifty-four students and staff members embarked on an academic excursion to the Federal Ministry of Defence Headquarters (Ship House), Abuja. The visit was organized to bridge classroom learning with practical experience by exposing students to the realities of national security administration, governance, defence management, and policy formulation. During the visit, students engaged in an interactive session with the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), and received career mentorship on opportunities in diplomacy, strategic intelligence, public administration, and national security institutions. Students of the Department also participated in the All Nigerian Youth Debating Championship hosted by Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu State, from 27 to 31 March 2026. The competition brought together university students and graduates from across Nigeria for a series of highly competitive debating rounds. Students including Ondoma Jeffrey, Esther Odih, Cyprian Francis, and Michael Chibuike represented the Department and performed commendably, demonstrating exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills. The Department further distinguished itself at the 11th edition of the All Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC 2024), hosted by Veritas University Abuja. Ondoma Jeffrey emerged as the 10th Best Speaker in the competition, earning a medal and bringing recognition to both the Department and the University. These achievements reflect the Department's commitment to academic excellence, leadership development, critical thinking, effective communication, and the preparation of graduates for successful careers in politics, diplomacy, governance, and public service.
