From Dusty Ground to World-Class Pitch: Veritas University’s Sporting Revolution Takes Shape

news

A once unpaved, dusty playing field during the dry season and a muddy puddle-filled area during the rainy season is rapidly being transformed into a state-of-the-art sports complex, reflecting a major milestone in Veritas University's expanding mission to develop young people through sports, engage them in positive activities and provide a complete educational experience.

In late August 2026, the Veritas University administration made an official announcement regarding the planned construction of a multi-million-naira state-of-the-art sports facility that would be available for use by both the university community and the local population of Zuma in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

This is at the center of the university's plan to replace its old football stadium with an artificial turf playing surface. The new playing surface will provide a better environment for football, improve overall playing conditions, and serve as a base for developing emerging athletics talent.

For students and young football fans that have dealt with the shortcomings of the previous playing field, the development is much more than just a cosmetic change. It represents a new era in the university's dedication to providing young people with an opportunity to explore, develop and demonstrate their talents.

The change reflects the overall vision of the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Hycinth E. Ichoku. His leadership places increased importance on the role of sports in university life.

The contemporary university has become more than just a place for academic excellence and research. In addition to these areas of emphasis, the modern university now provides an environment which supports students' mental growth, as well as providing opportunities for the physical well-being, emotional stability, working collaboratively with others and participating in healthy competition.

The development of a new sports facility at Veritas University seems to be an extension of this concept, as it will allow students to reach high levels of academic achievement while also advancing in their athletic pursuits.

This is a particularly important development in a country with a high number of young footballing talent emerging from informal community pitches that do not have adequate training facilities. Through providing a more reliable playing surface, the university has provided a means of developing the talent by giving them more exposure, allowing them to take part in organized sports and possibly even progressing to higher levels of competition.

For young people from Zuma and other nearby areas, there is the potential that an upgraded sports facility will offer them an avenue to express their enthusiasm, drive, and ingenuity positively.

The difference between the previous playing surface and the emerging one has a great deal to say about where we are going.

The old playing area was characterized by sand, dust and a bumpy playing surface during the dry season. Once the rain started, some areas of the field became saturated with water, creating muddy spots which made it challenging to play on the field.

The above conditions may result in decreased participation in scheduled practices, increased risks of accidents (slips/falls) during practices, and diminished levels of uniformity needed to develop organized soccer programs.

Synthetic turf surfaces will offer more consistent playing conditions all year round, with the right drainage system, regular maintenance, and responsible usage.

In addition to the immediate benefits for the footballers, the project could also create a stronger sports culture at the university. With the ability to use a purpose-built playing area, there will be more opportunities for regular practice sessions; intra-mural competitions between different departments; inter-collegiate competition against other universities; and even community-based sports events.

Better facilities can have an impact on young people's sporting dreams, as many of these dreams start with playing on local neighborhood fields.

However, the success of the project is not only determined by the looks of the field, but also by the opportunities created, talent developed, and the athletic successes that could result from using this facility.

Building on an existing sporting foundation

The artificial turf field will be integrated into an existing sports complex which has two full-size basketball courts, hard court lawn tennis courts and a single volleyball court.

These facilities together offer the basis of an integrated approach to physical activity (recreation), health and fitness and competition in athletics within the University.

The current plan for a new facility represents a continuation of the development of the university's infrastructure, not a single action. It points to a time in the near future where students will be able to pursue many different types of sports and physical activity programs. Students will also have the opportunity to develop relationships outside of the classroom.

The creation of a successful sports culture within an institution may enhance its overall identity. As is common with all types of sporting competition, creating a feeling of community and shared experiences through participation in these events will encourage students to develop a sense of discipline, respect for one another and a feeling that they belong to a larger group.

The university's expanding facilities may lead to a greater emphasis on creating a more active and engaged sports culture if they are backed up by strong leadership, coaching, top quality equipment and ongoing competitive opportunities.

Perhaps, what makes this project so important is that it states it wants to work with both the university and the area around the university.

Universities don't exist by themselves. When they create opportunities and real value for those who live nearby, it helps to ensure that they will be relevant in the future.

Modern sports facilities will provide Zuma with several options for engaging young people in sports, hosting community-based sports events, identifying talented athletes, and providing opportunities for positive interactions among students and other members of the community.

Sport is able to create a common bond between all types of people, regardless of their social status, income level or cultural background. If a facility is run correctly, it will be a common area for young people to establish relationships with others, understand how to work as a team, and gain a sense of personal responsibility.

Therefore, the most significant part of the project will be the community. To make sure that everyone outside of the university receives benefits from this project, we need to provide open access to our projects, have cheap ways for people to participate if they can, set up competitive events and establish clear rules about who maintains what.

Sustainable investment in coaching, youth development programs, and collaborative relationships with sports organizations may turn the physical infrastructure into a viable talent development system.

While the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex or arena is an achievement, it represents just one step on a long road.

Synthetic surfaces must have proper care, appropriate drainage, limited use and regular evaluation to maintain a safe and usable surface. Additionally, whether or not there are trained coaches, sports gear, first aid supplies and structured programs available can greatly impact the overall effectiveness of the facility.

The next step for the university is to turn its investment into tangible results: higher levels of student involvement in campus life, greater strength among our university athletic programs, more frequent competitive events on campus and significant interaction with the local community and other Universities within Abuja .

There are other opportunities to work with sports academy, professional club, company sponsor and related sports organization. These collaborations may increase opportunities for young athletes to grow their skills and help keep the facility sustainable over time.

With appropriate organizational systems in place, the playing field can be much more than just a place to play. It can also be a springboard for finding and cultivating young talent that would have been overlooked without such systems.

The development of the football field at Veritas University provides a clear example of how institutional goals can change a simple space into a potential area for expansion.

A dusty field that would sometimes be flooded with water has become a symbol of what could be possible again for students, soccer players, and other young people who live in the Zuma area.

For Rev. Fr. Hycinth E. Ichoku and the University Administration, the main issue will be to make sure that the emerging facility meets the promise of what it can do for the students' life, the healthy competition among them, the development of the young people, and the concept of how education should help to develop each individual as a whole.

If the project is maintained over time, has inclusive access and is developed through a structured program for sports development, Veritas University will have created a viable example of how Nigerian universities can balance their academic goals with their students' physical and mental health.

Ultimately, the true importance of the changes taking place at the university will come from what happens to the youth that find direction and focus while playing on the synthetic turf; those with talent that are given opportunities to grow and develop; and the closer connection that is developed between the university and its surrounding community.

A field that used to be covered in dirt and mud is now being developed by Veritas University as an area where students will have access to opportunities, develop discipline and pursue their ambitions through sports.
