College of Medicine

The idea to establish the College started around 2018 when some Catholic Medical Practitioners around Abuja approached the school to help them establish a Medical School. Several meetings were held and attempts made without success due to the huge cost implications until 2023 when the actual building of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (FBMS) and application to National Universities Commission (NUC) were made. The positive result made Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to give the go ahead to admit medical students for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The NUC approval which was adopted by JAMB and MDCN was for Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Science (BSc) Human Anatomy and Human Physiology programmes.

The College of Medicine Veritas University, Bwari Abuja, FCT, was established under the Vice-Chancellorship of Rev. Fr. Prof. Hyacinth Ementa Ichoku with Prof. Titus Osita Chukwuankwu as the foundation Provost. The visitor to the University, (President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the time was His Grace, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, the Chancellor, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius. A. Kaigama, OFR, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, His Lordship, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, while His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, CON, was the Chairman Board of Trustees of the Endowment fund.

Several individuals played key roles to stimulate the establishment and eventual take-off of the Medical School. It will be very difficult to mention names without missing out on many.

Currently, the staff strength is robust with a good staff mix for both Teaching and non-Teaching staff. Among the Teaching staff, there is also a good mix of the various cadres. The facilities are top-notch for the training of medical students, Human Anatomy and Human Physiology students of this modern era.
