Chinyere S. Ecoma B.A, M.A, PhD, FCIA
Associate Professor

Dr. (Mrs.) Chinyere S. Ecoma is an Associate Professor of History in the Department of History and International Relations, Faculty of Humanities, Veritas University, Abuja. She is an accomplished Historian, researcher and a seasoned administrator. She holds B.A. (Hons.) in Education/History (1988), M.A. African History (1993) and Ph.D. History (2000) with specialization in Economic History from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. She also holds professional qualifications such as Teachers’ Grade II Certificate (1978), Nigeria Certificate in Education (1983), and Advanced Certificate in Education (2017).

Dr. Ecoma taught History in Secondary Schools such as Adiaha Obong Secondary Commercial School, Eniong Offot, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and Holy Child Secondary School, Marian Hill, Calabar, Cross River State before transferring her services to the mainstream Civil Service where she rose to the rank of Director of Administration. She also taught in Teachers’ Training College, Ikom, and Teachers’ Training College, Calabar, all in Cross River State. As an avid researcher, she carried out a groundbreaking research on the peoples, trade and culture of the Upper Cross River Region. This research took her to almost all the relevant units within the Region and its surroundings.

 

In pursuit of excellence in academics, Dr. Chinyere Ecoma carried out extensive research overseas in the Public Record Office, Kew Gardens, Richmond, Surrey in England in 1995. After a stint in the Civil Service, she joined the academia. She taught previously in Ebonyi State University, National Open University of Nigeria, Babcock University, and the University of Calabar before joining Veritas University, Abuja.

 

Dr. Ecoma is a widely published author with over thirty (30) publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals spread across several countries and continents, some of which are indexed in foreign libraries. She served as the Editor-in-Chief of VUNA Journal of History and International Relations between 2014 and January 2020 and currently sits on the Editorial Board of over twenty (20) International Journals in Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East. Given her numerous contributions to humanity, she has received several awards. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration (FCAI) 2004, and a Fellow of the Institute of Strategic Entrepreneurs of Nigeria (FISEN) 2018. She has participated in national and international conferences and has been to Switzerland, Canada and Germany.

Dr. Ecoma served as the Head, Department of History and International Relations, Veritas University from 2014 to January 2020. From the Civil Service to academia, she has been appointed into several Panels and Committees. Within the University, she has functioned in many capacities, viz: Head of Department, Sub Dean, Member of Senate, and member of several Departmental, Faculty and University Committees. She has also been appointed into the Scientific Board of nine (9) International Conferences across Europe, and serves as a Member of the Advisory Board Committee of the Institute of Strategic Entrepreneurs of Nigeria (ISEN). In the University, she has taught and supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is an Honorary Peer Reviewer of Global Journals Inc. (USA, United Kingdom and India), a Member of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), and an Honorary Member of the International Scholarly Committee of the Interdisciplinary Scholarly Book Series within the Eschaton Library, Kraków, Poland. Her areas of research interest include Gender Studies, Intergroup Relations, Economic History, and African History.
